Is there any point going to the doctor, could they do anything if I have cracked!

Question: Is there any point going to the doctor, could they do anything if I have cracked the bone in my finger?
Well about a week ago something made me jump and I bashed my finger really hard, it hurt so much I could not actually talk for a while afterwards.

Since then my finger has got really swollen and it is really painful still, the pain is getting worse, I can still bend it but I do not use it if I am holding anything because it is very painful.

My mum said they would not do anything about it even if I have broken the bone, she does not really care and never likes taking me to the doctor.

But what should I do?
Could a doctor do anything?

If your finger is straight, and not bent or deformed in any way, there's not much point in seeing a doctor, because even if it's broken, the most they might do is give you a splint. You can make a splint yourself if it's bothering you that much.

Yeah, you should definitely still go to the doctor. They could at least splint it or advise you the best way to take care of it. And actually, if it's bad enough or broken in the right place, they could cast it. My sister broke her finger a few years ago, and they put her hand and wrist in a cast. So yes, definitely at least go and see what's up with your finger.

Hi Nicole,If your finger is swolen and hurts a lot then it is broken. all they will do is xray your finger then if you don't need surgery they will put your finger next to the next finger and tape them to-gether to stop the finger moving, then you will be given pain killers ok.hope your better soon.

my own opinion.

I broke my finger, years ago so things might have changed. I had an xray and then my finger was strapped up. they had to make sure that the bone was in the right place. have you got a minor injuries clinic at your local hospital? it'd be worth having it checked. Put it this way, what would be dafter, having it checked out and the doc saying nothing can be done - or, listen to people who don't have all the information - like having seen it?

They will x ray and see if you have a fracture and may have to splint or cast it. Or if its more severe they will have to perform surgery. You should see a doctor so he/she can splint it properly (if it needs to be splinted) that way it's heals correctly.

It would be wise to have an x-ray just to make sure it is ok. They usually tape it to an adjacent finger to save you damaging it again. Just to ignore it is not very smart. If your mum won't take you to the doctor, make the appointment and go on your own.
