Is my unopened bottle of Omega-3 Fish Oil Concentrate still good if the expirati!

Question: Is my unopened bottle of Omega-3 Fish Oil Concentrate still good if the expiration date is 9/09?
Research indicates that taking in Omega-3 is great for the heart but better if taken in when actually eating fish. I bought a dietary supplement and misplaced it in the back of a cupboard. Does anyone know if I'll get sick from the fish oil since it's past the expiration date?

Answers:

Medications, both OTC and prescription, have expiration dating on them for a reason. Most of the time, once the expiration date is reached, the active ingredient in the product begins to lose its effectiveness (i.e. potency). As time passes, this loss increases. Some medication, such as Tetracycline, actually becomes dangerous, once the expiration date is past. My advice-toss the old and purchase the new. Omega 3 isn't very costly.

Oils and fats can go rancid (spoil). Same with the oils in perfumes, can change the way a perfume smells over time. It could be ok, but probably some of the oil has gone rancid (spoiled from bacteria) and some of the anti-oxidants have oxidized.
