What do the tonsils actually do?!

Question: What do the tonsils actually do?
I have a throat infection and apparently my my tonsils are covered in pus. The ER doctor said if it happened again they'd take my tonsils out. So now I'm kind of curious of the actual purpose of tonsils is.

Answers:

They are part of the lymphatic system. This system is helps with fighting infection and the transportation of body wastes after fighting off infection. The tonsil are kind of a dumping station for the lymphatic system and having them removed causes no issues and the body will adapt.
But here is some things to think about.
The older we get the worse it is to have them removed. Most docs won't remove them unless they are starting to block your airway when they get swollen. If you have routine throat infections go see a ENT doctor as he is the one to remove them or give you the best advice to help you make an informed decision.
Good luck
