I freak out and act different when theirs more then 1 person with me?!

Question: I freak out and act different when theirs more then 1 person with me?
All my friends have noticed that when we hang out alone i'm completely different i'm layed back good for conversation and more fun. When i'm with more then 1 or 2 people i start acting way different like i either zone out and don't talk at all or when i do talk i talk like i am "special" and i go from supper cool to supper annoying. Whats wrong with me? Is there some kind of medicine i can talk to my doctor about? Is there a name for this? Or am i just crazy and just need to ovoid people...?

Answers:

You probably have social anxiety issues. I have a lot of social anxiety, I think because I'm too self-aware at times. One thing I've noticed is that I act differently depending on who I'm with. When I'm with someone who I see as more serious, I'll act seriously. When I'm with someone silly, I act more silly. Now, when I'm with a serious person and a silly person at the same time, how am I supposed to act? A lot of the times I just clam up, or struggle to act in a way that both people will be comfortable around. As a result, I seem and feel awkward. I've never sought medical or psychiatric help for my anxiety, but it is a big problem in my life.

Hope this helps!

Perhaps you're more laid back during a one-to-one situation as that may seem less overwhelming. If you tend to get more anxious while around more than one person, that may be a symptom of social anxiety. Please do talk with a licensed counselor about it, and if need be, a board-certified psychiatrist.
