trouble swallowing everything?!

Question: Trouble swallowing everything?
For the last couple of months now, I have been having trouble swallowing just about everything, from food and drinks to even saliva. I have some sinus problems, which causes an almost constant slight post nasal drip, and also seem to produce a loot of mucus. When I try to swallow the mucus, it feels like it gets stuck in the back of my throat and I need to swallow a few additional times to get it down. I have the same problem with food. I also noticed that I start coughing after attempting to swallow things. To even attempt to eat food I need to have a bottle of water on hand to help it down, and I need to "force" the food down sometimes. I noticed that it is easier for me to swallow things in the morning, right when I wake up and it gets progresively worse throughout the day. What could this be please help??

Answers:

You probably have a high-gagreflex as I do when I try swallowing dry foods and medicine. I too have post-nasal drip, and I clear my throat frequently. Sometimes, dry tablet-medicine are hard to swallow and can take a second try. I take dry tablets and capsules each morning. I learned a way to swallow that might help you. With the medicine in my left hand, I placed them in my mouth a take a large swallow of juice, water, then push my head back as I swallow. This technique works for me. I advise against this procedure if you swallow carbonated drinks. You can belch and some of the medicine remains in your mouth.

You may need to visit an Ear, Nose, Throat specialist. The specialty is named, "Oto-lar-yn-gol-o-gy."

Good luck.
