Doc said i'm slightly anemic? Should I pay out of pocket for iron supplemen!

Question: Doc said i'm slightly anemic? Should I pay out of pocket for iron supplement or not buy it at all?
Medicaid doesn't cover iron supplement. I was prescribed by my doctor who did a blood test on me. she found everything normal but said that my blood count is low (hemoglobin, red blood cells).

so she prescribed liquid syrup iron supplement bcz I hate pills. CVS called me to tell me Medicaid won't cover it and it's just under $30. I told them I can't afford that now.

Honestly, I can't. I am stuck with moving costs, paying taxes, getting my taxes done, paying for life in general (rent, gas, food, etc). I believe I am slightly anemic due to my having oral surgery (4 teeth removed) in January, then 28 days later I got my period and plus I wasn't eating a lot of meat bcz I couldn't chew. Then 12 days later I was tested by my doctor during a physical.

Do you think I'm risking my life by bypassing the supplement? I take gummy vitamins, try to eat healthy. I was doing a lot of heavy work today around the house and my heart was racing I had to lie down. Should I cough up the money or should I just incorporate more meat into my meals?

When I was pregnant I was anemic. I bought an over the counter bottle of Iron tablets for under $4.00. It is all the same. The tablets were very tiny- I do not care to take pills either. You may not be putting your life in immediate danger, but iron deficiency will cause you to be sluggish and tired. When my daughter was very young she was also low on Iron. She wasn't a big meat eater and wouldn't touch eggs. I did some research on the subject. Many cereals are Iron fortified. Amazingly Rice Crispies are full of Iron. Dried fruits are also full of Iron- dried apricots especially. Eggs are another good source (eat the yolks too). You could also get a multivitamin that contains Iron. I used to take a Centrum chewable with Iron. Do your own research and find foods that you can tolerate or find a suitable supplement- trust me you will feel better!

I'm slightly anemic as well. Just eat peanuts if you're not allergic, or buy veggie juices, anything that contains iron. You don't have to pay for supplements believe me there are plenty of foods containing iron. I am just fine & all I do is eat right & look for iron-containing foods. Don't stress it.

Just drink a lot of warm, fresh chicken blood. That cures all, believe me.

if u increase your red meat, and green vegetable intake,
and reduce your bread and sugar intake you should be fine. x

cough up the money, sometimes its better to pay out of pocket, i was in a similar situation recently, i just found out i had one leg shorter than the other which was creating tons of problems with my joints and making it difficult for me to work, i never knew i had that problem but i dont have health ins or medicaid either and i have my job though, so i did the only thing i could , i went to see a chiropractor who referred me to a specialist and theyre more expensive than just seeing a doctor, he wrote out the perscription for my lift, i then had to go to denver, two hrs away to drop off the perscription, i dont even drive, my friend drove me and i paid the gas, i had to buy shoes too, and once i got them back i sent in my hiking boots for lifts and another pair of shoes too that had snowtires under them, all this was hundreds of dollars, probably about $700, i dont have ins but i needed that stuff so i went and got them anyways, sometimes you gotta do what you have to do

Hi...Well,that makes no sense....Your medications should be covered by your medicaid...I also take a prescription for my anemia...Folic acid 1mg daily.I also take an over the counter Calcium supplement and an added Vitamin D as well, which is covered by medicaid in my state...it's the law here anyways.A few exceptions I'm sure, but for necessities it's the law!
I suggest that you contact the doctor who prescribed you the iron supplement(liquid form),and ask her if she is willing to prescribe you something that your insurance/medicaid WILL pay for.You should not have to pay out of your own pocket for this medication. You clearly NEED this iron supplement, and your monthly periods will only make your iron levels go down more so than now.My experience anyway.
But,anyways...call your prescribing doctor and ask for a prescription that your states medicaid will pay for.
I wish you all the best and hope that everything works out for you.
