Is it safe to take tetracycline pills if you have high blood pressure?!

Question: Is it safe to take tetracycline pills if you have high blood pressure?
If you could post a website link with the information that would be great. Thanks

Answers:

Yes it is safe; there is no overt contraindication in using tetracycline in patients with hypertension (high blood pressure). It is metabolized in the liver and excreted in the bile, so the biggest area of concern is impairment of liver function. As an antibiotic, tetracycline only binds to bacterial ribosomal subunits to inhibit DNA synthesis and replication; it does not have any effect on mechanisms within the body that regulate blood pressure. Adverse reactions in general are mild, especially when use is limited to short-term courses. As far as interactions between tetracycline and medications commonly used to treat high blood pressure: watch out for use with warfarin (can increase warfarin levels and risk of bleeding), and quinapril (tablets contain magnesium, which reduces tetracycline absorption in the intestine).
I'd refer you to my drug information sources, but they are subscription-only.
