Why won't she help herself?!

Question: Why won't she help herself?
I have a friend who is 55 years old, she is about 80 pounds over weight, she has diabetes, asthma, and hypertension.
I think she has had most of these problems from a young age....like in her 30's.
She absolutely refuses to do anything about it.
She will NOT exercise and she eats sweets and pop.

We have tried telling her that if she exercised and ate better she would not have all these health problems. I am sure her doctors have told her the same.
But it does no good. She will not do it.

We work together and our jobs are very sedentary (we sit at desks all day) she can sit for hours in the exact same position without moving.
I try to get her to get up every hour to stretch, Nope.
I try to get her to walk at lunch time Nope.
I have actually stopped asking her.

Why won't she help herself get well?

Thanks!

Answers:

A good old saying is 'you can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink" I know that you mean well but it totally up to her.
An alcoholic needs to say I have a problem before they will get better. They are in denial until they feel they need help. You friend is apparently happy or doesn't care weather she gets better. Let her be the one to complain about what is wrong with herself and then you can suggest what she can do. Baby steps of suggestion. You could always ask her to help you. You don't want to do things by yourself. A walk, a stretch-ask her to help you by doing it with you. It is more fun if you do things with a friend.

Maybe you need to dig a little deeper and find the root of the whole problem. There is probably a depression issue and she doesnt want to help herself.

she's depressed she can't do it alone
counseling and meds
trust me
