What are IV's like...?!

Question: What are IV's like...?
I have this giant fear of them.
such a fear, where I'm scared of hospitals because of IV's and even to the point where I wouldn't want to give birth (I'm not pregnant or anything) in a hospital because of IV's.
1.) what do they feel like, constantly being in?
2.) is it just constant pain in your arm?
3.) do you notice it?
4.) please describe what it feels like.
5.) what is it like, it being poked in your vein?
also, some reassurance or advice/tips would be great, just for me to get over the fear.

Answers:

1) you don't really feel it after they have inserted it into your skin and taped it down
2) definitely not
3) it can be noticeable if you move your arm/hand around, but otherwise it doesn't really feel like anything. You can't feel the fluid going in or anything like that.
4) I got one for an extremely high fever. I didn't really notice it, especially while I had the fever. You feel the initial penetration of the needle of course, then they secure it with tape and attach the IV line. If you were giving birth or having some kind of medical emergency you would likely not notice any physical pain from the IV because whatever else was going on would be more intense.
5) have you had blood drawn or received an immunization? It's pretty much the same as that. Once the needle is in, it's in. It's the initial 'poke' that causes the pain.

I'm none too keen on needles, but when I got one I figured that there were much more invasive and painful medical procedures. Hopefully you won't ever need an IV, but if you do, it will be something necessary. Just because you're giving birth in a hospital doesn't mean you'll automatically be given an IV.

Have you ever had an injection or a needle put it to get a blood test.? It is not difference from that and when it is in you don't feel anything. I hate hospitals but when I was giving birth to my daughter I had no choice and they did put an IV in and I didn't feel a thing, I was more worried about the painful contraction of the labour and even then I got an epidural to ease the pain, that is a large needle in your spine and even then I didn't feel a thing.

It stings at first, but it's an IV. Therefore the pain will be gone in like 3 minutes. I hate them, so I usually don't move my arm as much as I can because… take a pencil. Now barellllyyyy poke the area where they go in. thats what they feel like. It dont hurt, but you can feel it. Plus you get pretty goofy on the medication. It's always fun. Just try not to move your arm, because you will probably be really parenoid about feeling the pain, and the less you move your arm, the less you notice it, and the less you care about having an IV in your arm. Good luck!

It hurts for about 1 min after they put it in your arm. Then after that since its taped down, its more of an annoyance than pain. Its annoying that you cant move your arm around, and the tape feels stiff on your arm but thats about it. If you are afraid of them, once its in, dont look at it.

I have had IV's in my arm about 9 times.

I'm sorry, but why o' why are alot of the questions on this forum asking about pregnancy?? Where are all of you girls/women from??

To answer your question, having a medical needle stuck into your vein is like getting a bee sting. Just take a deep breath when the nurse attempts to insert the needle into your vein.
