Is magnesium citrate supposed to cause diarrhea? What can I do to start having r!

Question: Is magnesium citrate supposed to cause diarrhea? What can I do to start having regular bowel movements again?
I got food poisoning or some bad stomach flu about a week ago. It started out as a normal stomach flu: nausea, chills, headache, body aches, etc. About 5 days ago it turned into some kind of intestinal flu and I've had mild diarrhea every day since, but still feel stopped up. I went to the ER because of abdominal pain, they took X-Rays, and said was "severely constipated." They gave me Magnesium Citrate to clear up. Since then I've continued to have diarrhea. Is liquid Magnesium Citrate supposed to cause diarrhea as well? Even after taking the MC, I'm still experiencing discomfort in my stomach, still have diarrhea, and it doesn't feel like much has changed. What the heck is going on? Does anyone have any other suggestions as to what I can do to get regular again?

Answers:

Most likely what was happening was that you were having (not to get too gross here, but) diarrhea around a LOT of constipation.
The magnesium has now cleared that up.
And yes, magnesium (ever hear of Milk of Magnesium? It's an over the counter remedy for constipation) definitely causes diarrhea.
So once you stop that, the diarrhea should stop. Keep drinking lots and lots of liquids to help stay regular; the colon is where the body absorbs most of its water, so you need to drink a lot so the stool will stay soft.

If you are still drinking th Citrate of Magnesium stop immediately. By now you are dehydrated and you have to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day and eat a bland diet of broths, boiled eggs, and even banana's to replenish your body with potassium. CM will cause you to have diarrhea since it is only suppose to stop constipation.

GO SEE YOUR DOC!!! This is really not the place for medical advice. How much CM did you get from your er? I would presume they only gave you only one bottle of the stuff. I would be running - no pun intended - to your doc ASAP! You need to be checked out better.
