How can I stop a panic attack every time the phone rings?!

Question: How can I stop a panic attack every time the phone rings?
I live overseas, so whenever someone calls me, I think it's bad news - cause calls come in infrequently just for conversation. When the phone rings, I have a panic attack (rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath). My mom just died a few months ago and I was told about it by someone using Skype. I don't even use Skype anymore or facebook. I have family who believe I don't care about what is going on back home. Little do they know, I'm very often immobile and in solitude, and life is just creeping along without any joy. I guess I'm looking for a way to live without panic, without fear. What can I do to stop the panic before I return home in another year?

Answers:

You can't live life in fear of bad things to come. It's full of both good and bad alike. I'm sorry about your loved one, its terrible when it happens. Family can help alot in your situation, let them know you still care and how you feel. You absolutely need joy in your life don't let the bad events in your life run the way you live. Take the good with the bad pick yourself up and drive on. Remember when your on the very bottom you've got nowhere to go but up. Hope this helps

If you can get to a psychotherapist, that would be your best bet for help in dealing with this issue. If you can't, then I suggest YOU start calling home yourself. Call once a week if you can afford to just to say 'hi.'
