First time getting an IV! Please help!!!?!

Question: First time getting an IV! Please help!!!?
I'm having surgery on Monday (tomorrow) and I'm going to get an IV when I'm awake. I'm wondering....

Does it hurt?

And any other things you want to tell me?

Answers:

IVs can vary in how they feel... from feeling nothing at all to a slight bit of discomfort but I wouldn't even call the discomfort pain, just more of a strange sensation. Take it from me, who is a huge chicken about EVERYTHING medical, IVs are nothing to worry about at all. In fact, I always look at them as a good thing because they are putting something good that you need right into your system. Have you ever had your blood drawn for a blood test? It is similar to that, they need to find a good vein, they clean it off and sometimes they will put a rubber tourniquet around you to make the vein pop out more. Then there is just a little prick and they put the IV into your vein and then cover it and tape it down. If you don't think about it or worry about it you won't even know its there. Depending on where they put it (arm, hand, leg, etc) you may not even feel it at all. Good luck!

I have had many, many, many IVs :)
