How is having dual diagnosis worse than having just substance abuse disorder?!

Question:

How is having dual diagnosis worse than having just substance abuse disorder?

Or just mental illness? Can people with this disorder still be treated?

Answers:

Persons diagnosed with co-occurring disorders or dual diagnosis are more likely to engage in violence. They are also more prone to noncompliance to medication and failure to respond to treatment. This illness will not only affect their life, but it will also have an effect on the people who are in close proximity to them. This illness can be treated, but treatment proves to be more difficult because the two illnesses will have to be treated simultaneously and people with dual diagnosis have greater chances of relapse.
