I'm really scared?!

Question:

I'm really scared?

I'm 14 and when I was 7 years old I was visiting my relatives in Indiana and we were at Best Buy, all of a sudden I hear people screaming Tornado and at the time I wasn't that scared because I didn't know what it was, but than my cousin let go of my hand to go to the back of the store and than I had to find the back of the store by myself. After that and ever since than have been extremely afraid of storms, thunderstorms don't scare me that much, but when I hear about severe thunderstorms I basically become paralyzed. Since I'm 14 I stay home by myself at home and it's summer so we get ALOT of thunderstorms, we almost always have a severe thunderstorm every day. I don't know what happens to me but my heart starts racing really fast and I get really scared, I get headaches and I start crying. I also sit down usually when these storms come and I usually can't move throughout the course of the entire storm like I'm paralyzed. What do you think is wrong with me.

Answers:

There is nothing "wrong" with you. Being afraid is okay. Now, its kind of hard for me to sympathise with you because i LOVE thunderstorms, i sit outside and watch them sometimes.

But start small, if you hear a Thunderstorm is comming, dont worry about it. Its controlling your mind. If you feel your heart start to pick up, brrreeeaaatthhh.... Dont let it stress you out.

I use to be so afraid of the dark it was paralyzing, but if you constantly tell yourself, there is nothing to be afraid of, over and over and over, even if you have to say it a billion times, it will help you. You dont want to make yourself feel stupid, but tell yourself that a simple thunderstorm is not that big of a deal. I have t-storms here all the time too- and thats exactly it. THink of it as something that is just part of life and let it breeze off your back like an annoying sibling(even if you dont have one, surly someone you know does)

I hope this helps a little bit.
