Vitamin overdose?!

Question:

Vitamin overdose?

I heard once that you can overdose and kill yourself with vitamins? Is this true? Can you do it with a daily mutivitamin and if so, how many would you have to take for it to work? How quickly would it work?

Answers:

You will never overdose from one multivitamin a day or even one mega multivitamin a day.

Vitamins A, D and E are fat soluble and your body does not eliminate them every day like the water soluble Vitamins B and C. Vitamin A overdoses can kill you and this has actually happened to some Arctic or Antarctic explorers way back who killed their huskies and then ate their liver. Never ever eat a dog's liver or the liver of a polar bear unless you wish to commit suicide. Vitamin A intakes greater than 10,000 IU a day are not generally recommended but even amounts up to 50,000 IU a day are unlikely to harm you although definitely not recommended. Overdosing on Vitamins D and E is possible but they are generally regarded as less dangerous than Vitamin A from the point of view of overdosing.
