Why is my eyeball long?!

Question:

Why is my eyeball long?

I have severe nearsightedness and I know the primary cause is because my eyeball is too long...
So my question is why is it that my eyeball is long?
does it grow that way because the eyeball adapts to seeing
things up close...?
was I born that way?
is it due to genetics?
or does is grow that way because of some lack of nutrition?
why is it that my eyeball has grown long?

I really would like to know!!

Answers:

I think what you are describing is a condition known as Astigmatism. It can occur because of increased usage of the eyes for close work. Heredity is also a cause. Other causes could be faulty nutrition, trauma or an underlying medical condition.

Make sure you don't spend to long periods reading, plus when you do read, every so often adjust your field of vision by looking into the distance. Make sure you eat healthily or if your diet is not particularly good then take a quality multivitamin/mineral tablet.

But first and foremost, see an Optician regularly to make sure you have the right glasses for your level of Astigmatism. They may be able to answer some of your queries. But an Opthamologist (eye Specialist) may be the only person fully qualified to shed some light on a possible cause in your individual case. If you live in the UK you would need a referral to see an Opthamologist from your GP. But I think elsewhere you can see one directly.

Hope this helps.
Best wishes.
