Will a seated shoulder press compress my spine?!

Question:

Will a seated shoulder press compress my spine?

I want to do a seated shoulder press since it works out all three shoulder muscles, but I have heard people say that it can cause compression of the spine because of the weight from above, causing loss of height.
Can anyone affirm the validity of this statement, or deny it?

Answers:

It is absolutely FALSE. Shoulder press/lifting weights does not stunt your growth or effect your height.

While it is true that compressing the spine will cause a slight decrease in height it is temporary. The reason is because your spine is made up of vertebrate (bone) and disks (cartilidge filled with a jelly like fluid). When the disks experience a load they will compress causing an undetectable decrease in height. However, simply getting out of bed causes your disks to compress due to gravity. It is well known that EVERYONE is taller in the morning because you have been laying down for 8 hours allowing your disks to relax and you are shorter at night due to walking around all day.

Additionally, the older we get the shorter we are. This is due, again, to the degeneration of the disks over the years of use. There is no need to worry, shoulder pressing adds lean muscle tissue and resistance for stronger bones.
