I have an idea for a national awareness day, how do you get the ball rolling?!

Question:

I have an idea for a national awareness day, how do you get the ball rolling?

I am a nurse and would like to have a national awareness day to make people more appreciative of their health. you always see national this day or national that day, I want to have an awareness day that will truly make a difference. Please help me figure out where to begin.

Answers:

It's beneficial to get a sponsor. For a day like the one you're mentioning, you should probably try to get support from an organization like the American Medical Association, or the ANA (or both). The more expert sponsorship you have, the more likely you'll be to succeed. Those groups also have some powerful lobbying arms which can help drive the measure forward.

For the declaration, the best approach is to start locally. You'll probably get your best traction by pitching your proposal to your city council or county commissioners. If your city or county can declare a national awareness day, you can use that proclamation at your state level. Work with your state Congress, using your city's representatives to gain traction with the Congress and the Governor's office.

From there, you'll move to the national level. You'll need the support of your state's legislators in Congress to draft a measure declaring such a day. Use the Governor's office to speak to your legislators, as he/she will have more pull than just you. And with a solid track record of success at the state and local level, and solid sponsorship, you might just have something.

Good luck!
