Am I having an allergic reaction to my medication?!

Question:

Am I having an allergic reaction to my medication?

I am taking Doxycycline for a skin infection. I started it Monday. So, I've taken it Monday, Tuesday, and I took it today. It's one tablet twice a day. Well, the first two days I've had no nausea or vomiting. But today almost an hour after I took it, I suddenly started to feel REALLY nauseous and weak. You're supposed to take this medication an hour before eating or 2 hours after eating, so on an empty stomach. I didn't eat anything today until an hour after I took it. I thought that may be what was wrong. But I could barely eat anything I felt so sick. I got some food down. I never vomited, though I felt like it earlier. My nausea has pretty much went away. I then got really drowsy, and the meds aren't supposed to cause drowsiness as far as I know. At the moment I feel kinda weak still.Am I having an allergic reaction or just need food with the meds? I do not want to eat food with this med. and risk the med. not doing it's job as well. Am I possibly not drinking enough water?

Answers:

It's highly likely that it is the LACK of food with your doxy that caused this reaction. It is actually MUCH WISER to take doxy (particularly at doses 100mg and above) WITH FOOD. Good foods to consider are several crackers or a piece of bread. It is NOT necessary (nor even useful) to take doxycycline on an empty stomach.

Hang in there,
