Does everyone have tonsils?!

Question:

Does everyone have tonsils?

Sorry if it sounds like a ridiculous question, but I was in for my check-up and my doctor said "Oh, you got your tonsils out." But I didn't, and asked her why she said that and she said I didn't have any tonsils. Very strange I thought! Did my tonsils just decide to disappear; I don't know! But does everyone have their tonsils? Or are mine just perhaps really small and unnoticeable?

Answers:

Most likely yours are very small. Growing up I had a friend who had the same situation. Hers had just never grown very large, and if you never have a major infection (i.e., mono, which has caused my tonsils to swell every time I've gotten sick since) there's no reason for them to become swollen and more noticable.
I suppose it is possible that some people are born without them, just as any genetic hiccup can cause changes to the human body.
