Physical Therapy?!

Question:

Physical Therapy?

Taking Physical Therapy for my knee ( torn ligament)will therapy really help heal a weak knee that dislocates from time to time or make things worse?

Answers:

I'm assuming you had surgery to repair the torn ligament, If so, physical therapy will help get your strength and flexibility back to normal and minimize the rahabilition time.

If you haven't had the surgery then physical therapy will only strengthen the muscles around your knee, which will allow you to do physical activities, but will not correct the problem. A torn ligament will not grow back and offers zero stability. Strengthening your muscles is a way to compensate only. If you're physically active, it's only a matter of time until your knee gives out again. Each time you do more damage. Also, you may not realize it, but you're probably favoring your injured knee, which in turn overloads your good knee. As a result, your good knee is at a higher risk of injury. Another aspect of your injury is the mental side. You probably are always thinking in the back of your mind that your knee will give out if you do this or move this certain way. Inhibiting your performance.

If you haven't had the reconstuctive surgery or are thinking about getting it, I'd highly recommend having it done. I've gone through 2 ACL reconstruction surgeries and it was almost as good as new. I hobbled around for about 10 years on a bad knee and it was no fun. Got the one fixed and then blew the other one. Every time my knee gave out I'd be laid up for a couple weeks missing out on fun. You do have to make a sacrifice going with surgery, but people are recovering in as little as 4-6 months. Having 2 good knees is priceless!

Hope I didn't wander off on a tagent.
