Cassie, that one's no fun at all. I waked up the other night with my eyes snapping open at 2:30 A.M. Talk about feeling like an idiot! Usually when I wake up like that I feel a little anxious, and that is because I probably ate something stupid before retiring and it is getting its revenge. But when you just can't sleep, what I did was to wrap myself in the cover on my bed and sit on the edge of the bed and just get quiet inside. You know, blank my mind. Not blame myself for being awake. When you can't sleep, the whole thing hinges on what you are telling yourself. So do not upset yourself further by making a big deal out of it. Just say very little to yourself and sit there quietly and turn out the light and be quiet inside. In about fifteen minutes, you will begin to feel drowsy again. In about twenty minutes you can flop back into bed and just let sleep overtake you. The whole idea of getting back to sleep or finding sleep in the first place is not to dramatise it. No big deal. "Here I am just sitting on the edge of my bed. I am safe. I am not anxious. I will be asleep in just a few minutes. Breathe..." If you can just tone the whole thing down and tell yourself something pleasant like that, in a very short interval, sleep will come.
