Answers:

Well, first you need to try to figure out why you have diarrhea so that can be corrected or avoided if possible in the future. Diarrhea is not necessarily your enemy. If it's from something you have eaten, or a gastrointestinal virus, it is the best way for the body to eliminate a great number of the offender quickly. Your best first response is to quit eating, and drink only clear liquids- water, clear watered juices like apple or grape, and lots of it. Alchohol is not a clear liquid, so beer doesn't count. As the system empties, the diarrhea will go away all by itself- after all, you only hold so much, and if you take nothing new in, all things come to an end. By the second day, you should have a really empty belly, and if you have no more diarrhea, you can eat bananas, rice, apples/applesauce, and bread of all kinds. You still drink only clear liquids though, and all dairy products are off limits. The diarrhea will have also eliminated the good bacterias you need to digest dairy products, and it will simply cause more diarrhea and cramping if you eat any- so no butter, milk, ice cream, or even yogurt at this point. On the third day, providing you still do not have diarrhea, you can add blandish foods, like plain potatos, steamed veggies (except corn or any veggie which tends to make you gassy), broiled, boiled, grilled meats- nothing fried yet, though. And really, salads are not a good idea just yet. If all continues to go well, you can gradually increase the things you eat, just stay away from fried stuff and dairy. By about day five, you should eat a carton of live culture, preferably organic yogurt, and fruit flavors are fine. Eat a carton or two a day for two days, and then begin adding back the dairy to your diet. If at any point the diarrhea shows up again, immediately quit eating and go back to the clear liquids. It usually doesn't, unless you eat dairy before you eat the yogurt, and even a tiny bit of milk in your tea is enough to set things back in motion.
So long as you can hold liquids and are not vomiting or running fever, you can easily survive a day or so of diarrhea, miserable as it is. Baby wipes are easier on the disposition than dry paper, as a means of cleaning up afterwards. Be sure you wash your hands thouroughly afterwards as well- no point flushing bacteria just to have it reintroduced by dirty hands. There isn't any good reason to rush out for the anti-diarrheal medications either. Since the cause is usually bacteria or virus, the last thing you want to do is bottle it all up inside you where it can just make matters worse. Let your body do what it knows to do best, and support it with liquids and a rest. Your best line of defense in the future is to be particularly careful of what you eat and where its from, and the sanitation of it's preparation. And of course, handwashing is critical. We usually infect ourselves, dirty hands to mouth- and a bit of soap and water will do a lot to eliminate that as a cause. No need to be scared, nor to be miserable for days. Just don't feed the buggies, drink and wait it out, as long as you aren't running fever and vomiting, you will do fine.
