My child is 6 years old and she's bleeding from her rectum when she uses the bat!

Question:

My child is 6 years old and she's bleeding from her rectum when she uses the bathroom.?

She complains with her stomach hurting a lot and says she feels like she has to burp. Could it be hemorrhoids, or ulcers of some kind.

Answers:

Well, my question to you is, is it a lot of bleeding or just a little? If it's just a little smear on the tissue when she wipes, she could have some rectial irritation if she is having to strain to go to the bathroom, i.e. constipated. Constipation could certainly make her little tummy hurt and feel bloated and the need to "burp". Certainly if she is constipated, make sure she gets plenty of plain ol' water-not juices, sodas, etc. Something also that is constipating is dairy products, cheese, milk, ice cream, etc. If she has more than 2 dairy servings a day, it could cause problems with bowel habits.

If she has an ulcer, yes it can cause bleeding, but it would have to be what called a "lower GI bleed" to appear bright red blood. If the ulcer was in her stomach, the blood looks dark maroon, black, and tarry. Children with ulcers are more rare than adults, so if it's a lot of blood, immediately notify your pediatrician. If it's just a little, rule out constipation first and see if that alleviates the blood. If it doesn't, call your pediatrician.
