How do you tell your child that their skin does not matter?!

Question:

How do you tell your child that their skin does not matter?

My daughter was born w/accute case of exema and she is 16 now...how do you tell her to ignore what people say about her skin...her feelings are really hurt because she can't even get a boyfriend because of it

Answers:

What you need to tell her is that ultimately skin doesn't matter but that we live in a world that doesn't always look at the important things, so her pain is very real. You need to be sure to let her know that her feelings are totally valid and that you are suffering with her. Having you on her side acknowledging and sharing her emotions is the best way to build inner strength in her. Let her know you feel her pain and how much it sucks to be 16 and not able to date because of a skin condition. With her feelings out in the open and you taking some of the burden, she's more likely to develop into an emtionally mature woman who is strong enough to love herself and even eventually find the special man who sees past her skin.
