What can cause false positives for morphine on standard (Texas CPS) urinalysis t!

Question:

What can cause false positives for morphine on standard (Texas CPS) urinalysis testing?

My daughter and her husband were reported to the Texas Childrens Protective agency by one of his relatives because of his alleged drug use. My daughter was not overly concerned because although she occasionally smokes pot, she insists that neither she or her husband use anything more potent and the state is not as concerned about pot. Well, it turned out that he tested positive for morphine. He insists that he uses nothing containing morphine and it must be a mistake. I have advised her to demand a retest but I am pretty sure that these tests have come a long way and are advanced enough to be accurate on this. Does anyone have anything to either support or discredit these results?

Answers:

I agree with poppy seeds--poppy seed muffins, bagels, etc., but it's unlikely that he ate enough to give a false positive. There are other narcotics that can show up as morphine in a drug tests--codeine, for instance, which is found in a lot of prescription cough medicines, or demerol. Is it possible your daughter just doesn't know what her husband is using? Sorry to hear about their trouble with Protective Services--hope it works out OK in the end.
