Medical Question?!

Question:

Medical Question?

What exactly is a three hour glucose test and if the results come back at the third hour with your sugar reading 55 is that a bad reading? I am in the military is this something that could affect a career?

Answers:

I have gone through several glucose tests. Some up to 6 hours long. They will draw blood every 30 or 60 minutes to see how your body's blood sugar levels change over time and how quickly your body uses the sugars in it's system.

55 is a low reading. If that was your reading, then it sounds like you could have Hypoglycemia. I was diagnosed with it about 15 years ago.

It may or may not affect your career. There are different levels of severity, and each person is going to react to their case differently.

For example, mine used to be pretty bad. I would always have to carry around a snack with myself and eat something about every 2 hours. If I didn't, I would pass out. I passed out about 5 times because of this.

Now that I'm older, I've learned what the warning signs of an attack are, and I can stop one before it even starts. I haven't passed out in 10 years. I have also learned how to control and prevent it with the foods I eat and how often I eat.

My hypoglycemia has gotten better and better over the years and has almost become a non-issue.

One of my best friends, however, also has Hypoglycemia. Her's is a lot worse than mine, and has gotten worse over time. She can't eat sugar at all, she has strange attacks and episodes that last for a couple days.

So, it really depends on your situation. Talk to your doctor and get second opinions if you need to.
