I had my tonsils removed about 2 months ago and now I can't taste on the center !

Question:

I had my tonsils removed about 2 months ago and now I can't taste on the center of my tongue. Any suggestions?

I had my tonsils taken out and because I am allergic to different pain medications, I could not take luquid forms of medication instead I had to take pills that were ground up and then put in liquid. As a result I cannot taste food. I can taste sweet and hot but I can't distinguish flavor. It's like the center of my tongue is always bland.

Answers:

1. The center of your tongue contains virtually no taste buds. See http://library.thinkquest.org/3750/image... for a diagram of what you can taste where.
2. Tonsillectomies can temporarily disrupt the sense of taste. This may result from pressure from the mouth gag (how they held your mouth open during the surgery) or trauma to the nerves that help supply taste sensation. These nerves are in the neck, below the tonsils, but in some people the nerves may go up into the base of the tonsils. This may be what happened to you. If so, your sense of taste should slowly return over a period of 8-12 weeks.

Some people have reported taste disruptions (foods taste like other foods, or have a "rancid" taste), "phantom" tastes, and tongue numbness after tonsillectomies. Some people have reported that taste returned after 6 months, others after nearly a year. Incidences like these, however, are not usual.

Your sense of taste will probably return so slowly you may not realize it is occurring.

I hope this has been helpful!
