Oral Surgery???!

Question:

Oral Surgery???

My doctor told me about 3 months ago that my wisdom teeth are impacted, after looking at a sinus x-ray. She didn't make it seem that bad, so I have been waiting to get it done until the end of the summer. They started swelling and hurting Very bad so I finally went to the Dentist who said they are all underneath bone and I need to do it as soon as possible. Is that how all impacted wisdom teeth are? (Under bone) Just how bad is this surgery going to be? I took a week off of work next week, he said I should be okay after 4 days after the surgery. I thought I was going to be sedated, but he said I will be mostly awake, just how much pain can you feel this way? I am mostly nervous about being awake. I was awake through a minor sugery one time and it was a Horrible Experience they said I wouldn't feel a thing but I felt EVERYTHING! Any encouragement from someone who's had this done?? Thanks!

Answers:

When I had my wisdom teeth out I was awake. The worest part honestly was the needles to numb your mouth. You're going to get 6-8 shots of novicane in your mouth. The worest ones in my opinion were the ones on the roof of my mouth OUCH! but it was over in just a few seconds. So they numbed my mouth which took about 15 minutes it was the longest and hardest part because I have a needle phobia and anxiety so I had a panic attack and my dad had to calm me back down. I had gas(nitrusoxide I think) to help sedate me but half way threw I forgot to keep breathing out of my nose and started breathing out of my mouth so I wasn't really sedated. I mouth was completeley numb so all I could feel was the pressure in my mouth. The pressure was a bit much but it wasn't unbarable. They put this thing in your mouth that holds your mouth open as far as it can go thats a little weird but it doesn't hurt. So what your going to feel is the PRESSURE of the scalpul cutting open your gums. After that the dentist is going to take this chizel looking thing and he puts it under your tooth and and makes this motion like your turning the key in your car over and over again. You will feel the pressure of him doing this but no pain. Then he rinses your mouth with salt water and stiches you up. It took my oral surgeon 8 minutes to take out all four of my wisdom teeth and stiche me up. I didn't even need to use the perscription pain medication he persrcibed me I just took extra strength quick release tylenol and I was fun it honestly doesn't hurt that bad its just like a dull ache. DO NOT use straws for about a week because you'll develope dry sockets and I've heard those hurt sooo bad. I didn't have any but I didn't use straws and didn't suck anything I just rinsed my mouth with water and let it roll out of my mouth after I brushed my teeth. I tried to just swallow my drinks instead of sucking them to the back of my mouth. I ate lots of jello-o and pudding the first couple of day. It honestly isn't that bad 2 days after I had my wisdom teeth out I had to go to the hospital to have surgery and even after that my mouth didn't hurt. Your stiches will fall out in about 2-3 weeks.
