Getting a mole removed..help!?!

Question:

Getting a mole removed..help!?

I plan on getting a small mole on my jaw removed. It's not malignant or anything, but it's in a place where I lean my face against my hand and I've accidentally scratched it a few times which makes it tender and sore, so I'm getting it removed soon as a precaution.

Has anyone ever had this procedure done before? Do you feel anything? And how about scarring?

Answers:

Yes, I have had 3 moles removed, 2 were OK, 1 was precancerous - good thing I got it off!

First of all, doctors don't freeze or burn moles off because even if the doctor feels 100% that it is not malignant, he/she will still send it to the pathology lab for examination to make sure.

Second, it most certainly should not be very painful. For the person who said it was, the doctor must not have given a local anesthetic, and that's a terrible doctor.

The procedure is simple. You get a quick subcutaneous (under the skin) shot. It doesn't go into the muscle, so the shot is almost nothing, really. Then the doctor cleanly cuts it off, and you will feel NOTHING.

Talk to your doctor about your concerns of a scar before the day you have to get it removed. Obviously, the smaller the mole, the less the chances of getting a scar. I assume you are going to a dermatologist. If a scar is really, really a concern for you, go to a dermatologist who is also a plastic surgeon. Then you will be guaranteed no scar, although it will cost more. But in general, you don't have to worry about getting a scar. 2 of mine were small enough, about as round as a pencil eraser - they did not leave any scars; even a doctor several years later couldn't see where they were. The 3rd one was a bit larger, so my doctor gave me one stitch, which left so small a scar, the doctor has to hunt for it during exams.

So, you really have nothing to worry about, and you will feel better after. Best of luck.
