Question:

I'm 15,& i'm experiencing some joint problems. anyone know what's causing this?

i've been practicing martial arts for over a year. as a result of martial arts, i'm extremely flexible. when i'm practicing martial arts, the instructors work with us on punching, kicking, rolling, jump kicks, combos, & sometimes we do military-type exercises. i swam for over 6 years on a competitive team, but i no longer competitively swim.

i've been having problems with my hips & knees. on a regular basis, my hips feel like a finger does when you push it too far back, just before you break it, & sometimes my leg tingles. most of the time, my hips grind & pop when i sit certain ways. as for my knees, they pop when i get up, & sometimes walk.

i guess my questions are, is my martial arts prompting this, or is it just normal for a 15 year old girl to have these problems? also, what do these problems mean in terms of injury, or disease, or anything like that?? &, what should i do about these problems?

Answers:

I am in the same boat as you are. I have joint problems like that I swam competitevley for 6 years and did martial arts for just over a year. My hips popped, my knees cracked, I have foot problems(my toes cramp up so bad my toes pop out of joint and I have to wear corrective shoes), I have inner and outer ear problems(I can never swim again and I have to use persricption ear drops everyday), my back is messed up, my elbow is all screwed up(arthritus, tendonitus, and it stopped growing so one arm is an inch longer then the other), I have tendonitus in both hands, wrists, and forearms, my ankles also pop and crack, I also have arthritus in my hands. My problems started when I was 15, almost 2 years ago. My problems started the same way yours did just my hips and knees. In less then 2 years all of the things I listed above happened. I have been to more doctors then I can count and in 2 years my body went from normal to that of a 50 year old iron man competitor, with no explination except for the fact that because I was growing and doing sports like swimming and martial arts it put to much strain on my body and ruined my joints, tendons, ligaments, muscles, and bone structure. The only thing you can really do is stop or take about a year or two off from martial arts and hope nothing happens. Take it from me its worth it in the long run.
