Has anyone woken up with half thier face numb?!

Question:

Has anyone woken up with half thier face numb?

By numb, I don't mean so much tingly, and not controlled very well -- for instance, after brushing my teeth, when swishing water in my mouth, (face pointed down) I couldn't easily stop some water from coming out of my mouth on the side that is "numb" because my bottom lip would not close hard enough. And it feels weird whenever I blink.

Maybe unrelated but -- my ear lobe and behind my ear (on same side) has been hurting since yesterday. This happens on occasion, (though it usually does not hurt this long) so I hadn't thought to much of it, until I woke up with this numbness.

I did a little reading online, and sounds like I shouldn't worry too much unless the pain gets really bad, or the numbness does not go away in 3-14 days -- but would just like to hear if anyone has any personal experiences/advice.

Answers:

This is a condition called Bell's Palsey (I had it several years ago) It is usually caused by the swelling of tissue around the blood vessels supplying the nerves of the face. It will go away once the swelling goes down. The only treatment is anti-inflamitory meds. It is usually not life threatening, but can last a few days or a few years.
