How can I overcome my crippling anxiety related to doctors?!

Question:

How can I overcome my crippling anxiety related to doctors?

Answers:

You need to know what you are actually afraid of in order to be able to better face the fear. Does the physician actually intimidate you? Are you very modest and afraid to be examined? Are you afraid of a particular diagnosis? A test that you view as painful? Getting blood drawn, or a shot? Once you can determine what you fear, you can rationally ask yourself what is the worse thing that can happen. For example, say you are afraid of getting blood drawn. The worst thing that could happen is that you might pass out. So you tell the lab tech this. They are used to hearing this - a lot of people have that problem. Tell them you need to lay down and have your blood drawn laying down. You just work your way thru it. Don't be afraid to tell your doctor about your fears. I'd encourage you to write down all concerns and questions on a sheet of paper, and give it to him before your appointment so he can go over it and you won't forget anything if you have the jitters. Take a close friend or a relative for support, if needed. But go to the doctor if need be.
