Hormones are chemicals released by different glands all over the body. They are sort of messengers. When a gland in one part of the body releases some hormone, another part of the body will respond.
There are many different hormones. Some of the most famous are insulin, adrenalin, and testosterone.
Insulin is produced inside the pancreas, and the pancreas is a gland near the liver. It helps cells throughout the body take in sugar for energy from the bloodstream. If the pancreas can not produce insulin, the body develops Type I Diabetes. (Type II diabetes is when the cells don't respond to insulin anymore.)
Adrenalin (also called epinephrine) is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands that are attached to the kidneys. When a person is in danger, the adrenal gland releases hormone that gets the body ready for extreme physical efforts, called Fight or Flight. The pulse rate goes up and breathing gets faster to bring in more oxygen and distribute it to the muscles. The body makes more sugar available for energy for the muscles.
Testosterone is the male sex hormone, and it is mainly produced by the testicles. It is also produced by the adrenal gland and both men and women produce and require some testosterone in order to be healthy.
