Cobalt 60 Radiation Risks?

Last week in science class our teacher showed us a sample of what he claimed to be Cobalt 60.
He held it with tongs and whatever the sample size was, it was enclosed in a small plastic case. It made the Gieger counter go from 8 to 256 in a few seconds. I was sitting approx 7Meters from this, what risks are posed?
