Medical question about anti-depressants.?!

Question:

Medical question about anti-depressants.?

Why do Doctors keep prescribing me things like Paxil,Prozac,Zoloft,Celexa,Lex... when I have panic attacks?I don't need something full time.Just every now & then. Plus, I've either been suicidal or zombied out with the meds they HAVE been giving me. I'm menapausal, had everything took out. I cry if you sneeze! BUT,...it's not depression. What should I do to get the proper medication?

I have been on HRT for7 years, now.Cancer runs high in my family. So after 7 yrs. I went off them.Still asked if I could possibly get a homeopathic med 4 menapause. So,as I see it ,give the menapausal women the anti-depressants that make them suicidal. No one would miss them, anyway.Whatever happened to the day that menapausal women were given things that helped ONLY when THEY NEEDED help.Like something you don't have to take everyday.Like valium, xanax, etc.?Just when you have a panic attack?

Answers:

Hi! I know that meds are very helpful for some people, but my panic attacks only stopped after doing Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. CBT is proven to be the most effective thing for panic attacks. It takes a bit of work, but if you put the effort in it’s super effective. You can speak to your doctor about doing a course, or you can take a course for free online at: http://www.livinglifetothefull.com/elear... (It’s funded by NHS Scotland and has had great results thus far).

Also, (you probably know this already) do you know that breathing properly controls panic? As soon as you notice the signs of anxiety, check your breathing: breathe in slowly through your nose pushing your tummy out (to the count of 5 or so). Breathe out slowly and for a bit longer (to the count of 7 or so) through your mouth. Do not breathe rapidly or shallowly (in the chest area). This will soon restore the balance of oxygen and you will feel a lot better.

In addition you could try relaxation exercise tapes (progressive muscular relaxation). They really help if you practise often enough. This site has instructions on how to do it without the tapes (and other useful info): http://www.cci.health.wa.gov.au/resource...

Remember that you always have the power to stop your panic attack! Just breathe properly... (easy said than done I know, but it becomes second nature with practice!)

Good luck! I hope you start feeling better really soon.
