What does it mean to be waterlogged? Do I just have a head cold?!

Question:

What does it mean to be waterlogged? Do I just have a head cold?

I went water skiing this weekend and drank some of the river water (accident of course, not the best skiier!). I was on the boat and in the water for a long time. The next day I felt like I had a head cold, congestion, cough, itchy throat, etc. I am still sick. My friend told me I am waterlogged. I'm not sure what that means but I'm curious, has anyone else been sick after being in the water/boat? Thanks in advance for your help!

Answers:

I'm not sure your friend was being careful with his or her word choice, because waterlogged usually refers to an object that is completely soaked with water, to the point that it isn't absorbent any more.

More than anything, it sounds like your body is recovering from the physical stress you endured from the trip, as well as from drinking river water! In filtering sediment, contaminants, etc., your body had to do double-time to keep functioning correctly.

I've found that gargling with salt water is one of the best ways to feel better after having actually ingested river/ocean/lake/bay/any other body of water.
