How do I explain my paruresis?!

Question:

How do I explain my paruresis?

I have paruresis ("shy bladder"), which means I physically can't pee with other people around or if my time is limited. However, whenever I try to tell anyone about it, they either accuse me of being a germophobe or think I'm making it up. This causes big problems with my family; when we go on long trips, they always pressure me into using public facilities and then ask me why I didn't pee. (I should add that I'm a 16 year old girl.) I try to explain, but they get really mad at me for being "picky" or "too self-conscious". Has anyone else ever had to deal with people not believing them about this? How did you eventually get through it?

Don't give some stupid answer if you've never had this problem; you don't know what it's like if you haven't. Sorry if that's rude, but you just don't know unless you've personally dealt with it...

Answers:

My daughter has this and the way we relieved most of her issues is that when she has to go on trips or is away from home she ALWAYS carries her mp3 player in her pocket and puts them on before she leaves the car to go to the restroom. What we found with her is that it wasn't the place with people, it was the people making noise and talking that made her get "shy bladder."
You can try this trick and see if it works for you like it did my daughter. She has issues every once and a while but not like before.
