I am not a smoker, but sometimes I get the urge. How do I keep my self from hav!
Question:
I am not a smoker, but sometimes I get the urge. How do I keep my self from having a cigarette?
I am 18 and I do not like smoking. I believe it smells terrible. I have had many family members die of lung cancer, heart problems, etc... I have done research projects and anti-tobacco campaigns, so I know all of the negative effects. I have even held a real smoker's lung while giving a presentation.
Occasionally, I get the desire to have a cigarette. I had my first cigarette about 6 months ago and have had a total of about 10 cigarettes. I have not smoked in over a month, and I got the urge tonight (but did not smoke).
I know I have addictive tendencies and if I start giving in to these urges, I'll get hooked.
My question is what is an effective way to divert my attention when I get the desire to smoke?
Answers:
I would say chewing sugarless gum is a great idea. Or maybe a toothpick so you have the feeling of something in your lips, just don't choke. Keep busy with your hands like maybe a stress ball so you don't miss the feeling of a cigarette in your hand. And of course, don't be around people who are smoking, that way you won't be tempted!
