Surgery Depression?!

Question:

Surgery Depression?

I'm 19 and I have a lot of heart problems I was born with. I've had lots of surgery in the past and I've been told I'll need more surgery in the future. How do I stop worrying about my health and feeling bad about it. Although noone has told me its true I worry that I'm going to die at a young age because of my problems. Or that I might die in surgery.

I also wonder about why this is happening to me, why are most people healthy and I haven't been from birth? Why do I deserve this? I really wish I could be normal, but unfortunately thats not possible, how do I "get over" this?

Answers:

We can all worry about things that we don't know are going to happen, however, this is not a productive way to live your life. Find out the facts then deal with the facts and only the facts. Depression and anxiety often go together, please talk to your doctor and maybe consider some counseling. Sometimes cognitive distortions that we create can wreak havoc on your life and prevent you from fully living it. Your condition sounds like it has taken a toll on you and yes, I understand the Why me aspect. But take a look at the considerate side of yourself and as someone once told me when I was going through major health problems and asked the same question someone replied to me..."Why not you? Are you any more special than anyone else? At first I was angry, then realized the importance of this question. I also am not normal, in the normal sense, due to numerous surgeries, but I am alive, I am thankful for that, and live every day to the fullest because of that. You can always email me if you need or want to. Hang in there.
