Sports Medicine Doctors?!

Question:

Sports Medicine Doctors?

I'm 14 and I'm thinking of what I want to do when I'm older. I think being a sports medicine doctor would be cool but I don't know what they do. I have always loved helping people with their problems and I have been passionate about helping people with injuries ever since I broke my arm when I was 9. So what do you guys do. and where do most sports medicine doctors works, also how many years do you have to go to college for.

Answers:

There is a lot of things that they can do because many of them work in a special area, but generally they work with sports injuries, promoting lifelong fitness, rehabilitation, and things of that nature, many of them specialize and become family practice doctors, emergency medicine doctors, pediatric doctors, or Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation doctors. They generally work in the setting of a doctors office with patients, working with athletes in rehab from an injury, strength training with athletes or athletic training. Really there are many different directions that you could go depending on what you think would be appealing to you. Typically you have to go to medical school and get an MD or DO degree (which is typically 8 years of school- 4 years pre med, and 4 years in medical school, and then you spend several years in your residency for a specialty depending on what type of doctor average is about 4 years) Here are some sites that may be helpful:

Good luck! I also would like to go into the medical field...I'm not sure about a doctor because I would like to be a mother and have a family so I know being a doctor would be hard, but you sound like you would make a great doctor!
