How effective is the natural method of contraception?!

How effective is the natural method of contraception?
I mean the period of time before a period, when a woman can't get pregnant. I learnt about that in the biology class, but I forgot about it.

That's why I have my 3rd child. We weren't sure if we wanted another kiddo. Wanted to wait a month or two to see how having 2 was before I went and got my tubes tied. We had sex ONE time during that "period" where you "cant" get pregnant. Low and behold I have a 3rd child because you CAN.
