Migraines and the use of melatonin?!

Question:

Migraines and the use of melatonin?

A very short article that I read says:
MELATONIN FOR MIGRAINES?
“A small study from the Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein in Brazil suggests a new weapon against the searing pain of migraines: melatonin. The hormone, which regulates sleep-wake cycles, may prevent migraines. When doctors gave 34 migraine sufferers three milligrams of melatonin before bed for three months, 78% said the number of migraines was cut in half, including 25% whose headaches vanished. Migraine intensity also dropped. Melatonin may fine-tune brain chemicals that are out of balance in migraine sufferers, says study author Mario Peres, a neurologist. More study is needed before melatonin can be recommended. Some products that contain melatonin are approved by Heath Canada are available in heath food stores.”

I’m looking for more information please. Has anyone else read or heard anything about the use of melatonin for migraines?

THANKS!!!!!!!

Answers:

Hi.. I suffer from hormonal migraines... I also suffer from insomnia. I tried a lot of drugs for the insomnia and none of them worked. I still had the periodic mirgraine. I then started melatonin and it has been 3 months.. I sleep well and have not had a migraine. Not sure how it is all connected because the sleep might have effected my migraines.. but I will continue to take the melatonin each night.

I did check with my Dr. and he said it was safe. He even said I could take 2 pills before sleep each night and if I woke up during I could take another.
