Do shin splints go away?!

Question:

Do shin splints go away?

can i keep training with them will i get tougher or do they just get worse and worse?

i have this feeling that they will go away if i keep jogging/walking and when i walk the pain does often lessen. but everyone says with injuries you need to stay off it im just not convinced about that as i have had other injuries and moving the mucles ligiments etc healed me

Answers:

Yeah, they'll go away, but give them a little rest first. What seems to cause them is when the muscles of the calf are short and significantly stronger than the muscles of the shin.
Many people find relief by strengthening the shin muscles with exercises such as hooking the handle of a paint can full of concrete over the foot and lifting it repetitively.
For me, avoiding shin splints is accomplished more easily - just by making sure that before running, basketball, etc., I stretch the bejabbers out of my calf muscles. I lean against a wall with my foot way out behind me and, keeping my heel on the floor, move the rest of my leg at an increasingly acute angle forward.
Good luck!
