MRI machine claustraphobia?!

Question:

MRI machine claustraphobia?

I have to have an MRI done on Monday. The first time I was to have one done I FREAKED OUT. The tech had to pull me out of the machine. I had NO IDEA that I would act like that. I was perfectly calm until I was put inside. I must have this procedure and no chance for me to get an open MRI.
The doc gave me valium to take half hour before going into the machine.
Is there anything I can do to calm myself?
Has this happened to anyone else?

Answers:

Well don't feel like the Lone Rangerette, I totally understand. I have had prayer get me through MRIs, but sometimes you need a little assist from your MD. You can take a Xanax or like drug, it will just help keep you calm and before you know it, you'll be through. Also, try not to work yourself into thinking something bad, breathe deep, and try to keep your eyes closed so you aren't facing the machine close to you. Also, my husband was able to sit at the end of the machine and touch my ankle which kept me calm; if you have someone close, you could ask them to do this for you.

Take care and I send you courageous hugs.
