There should be virtually no problem with a child swallowing chewing gum. "This, too, shall pass!" It will come out with the regular discharge from the bowel (i.e., the kid is gonna poop it out.) Chewing gum will not sit in the stomach, it will not hang up in the intestines, and yes, your stomach acids can digest it (your stomaach acids can digest metals!)
Don't believe every old story you are told.
If you are really concerned call the child's doctor.
For the moment, however, don't keep giving a young child gum and relax.
