Too much IBUPROPHEN??!

Question:

Too much IBUPROPHEN??

I take about 2800-3200 mg of Ibuprohen daily. I have horrible migraines, that are almost too painful to bear. I've found that I can "sense" when they are coming, so I usually take 4-6 pills on the onset of a migraine. I've gone to specialist, who have given me other meds, but to no avail. Is taking this much pain medication going to harm me in the long run?

Answers:

The maximum dose of Ibuprofen listed in the PDR is 2400mg in a 24 hour period. This is usually spread out in three 800mg doses every eight hours. Taking more than that WILL lead to kidney and liver damage. I work in a hospital and have seen the effects of acetaminophen and ibuprofen overdoses. We refer to them as "Seven year suicides", because the damage can take as long as seven years to cause death. It is long and painful. Pain medicines taken as medically instructed can do a lot of good, but taken the wrong way, can be horrible. Please find a doctor willing to help you find the cause of your migraines, and an effective treatment. There have been studies that show there are environmental triggers as well as food allergies/sensitivities that can bring on migraines. You may never completely be able to stop them, but you might be able to make them more manageable. Check out the National Headache Foundation's website for more information on Migraines.
