Can our sense of smell detect varying ranges and degrees, similar as would our s!

Question:

Can our sense of smell detect varying ranges and degrees, similar as would our sense of hearing?

If so, could you test for it? Could some people sniff better than others? Could them be "low" smells and "high" smells? I had a sinus infection once and couldn't smell purfume, food, flowers, car exhaust or any of the "normal" odors, however, scents that I never remember smelling before suddenly became aparent, such as the cholorine in the tap water or rubber on bike tires. Anyone with any insight?
