Why is urine primarily yellow coloured?!

Question:

Why is urine primarily yellow coloured?

Answers:

Metabolites.

Urine will always be yellow to a certain degree because of metabolites and solutes, or breakdown products of normal metabolic processes in the body. Vitamin B2 (riboflavin) can increase the yellow coloration of urine so if you take a multivitamin don't be alarmed if your urine is more yellow in colour some hours after taking it. Actually, anything from light yellow to dark amber is considered normal.

The depth of colour is increased if you have dehydration and/or you are not drinking enough. Illness can cause urine colour to take on a darker more cloudy appearance. Apart form its colour, urine should be clear and not cloudy. Also, dark leafy vegetables can cause the urine to take on a slight green appearance.

Don't worry unless you have symptoms of a Urinary tract infection or cloudy urine beyond what is normal for you.

Urochrome is the name of the yellow pigment that gives urine its characterstic urine colour. Read the above article if you are interested in the science.

Hope this helps.
