What does an ulcer feel like?

For the last year I have had these episodes off and on where my stomach has this gnawing burn. Nothing phases it. I've tried antacids, food, pepto...It will strike for a few weeks (it's always worse at night) and then disappear again. I said something to my mom about it and she thought it may be an ulcer. I guess my dad used to have them. Does this sound like an ulcer? How do they diagnose an ulcer?

well if you do have an ulcer i feel for you! I was diagnosed with Peptic ulcers and then when i wasnt getting any better, my dr did an endoscopy on my and it showed i did have gastric ulcers and gastritis. All they could do for me was nuke the ulcers with the endoscope and then start me on Protonix and pray that took care of it. The best thing for me was a diet change. Which sucked. I am from texas and mexican (tex-mex) is what i live for! So try altering your diet for awhile, if your stomach is still inflamed go see a gastroenterologist. You may have something worse than an ulcer. Are you under a lot of stress? Stress can cause "stress" ulcers that go away once your life is settled down. So maybe seeing a therapist and just talking to someone for awhile could be more beneficial? hope that helps a little!
